It has been said that there is no such thing as writer’s block. It makes sense because we never seem to get eater’s block, or having fun block. Yet, sometimes it is difficult to come up with a fresh, new idea on a moment’s notice. Here are some tips on what to do when you can’t think of what to write about:
- Go for a walk. Getting out in the fresh air can clear your mind and give you some ideas. Don’t walk too far in one direction because when the ideas hit you will want to get back home quickly and write them down.
- Look through a book on the topic you want to write about. Just glancing through the table of contents or one chapter of a well written book on your topic will generally trigger some ideas about what you want to write about. It will make you think back to something that you haven’t thought about for awhile and soon you will be writing again.
- Listen to a recording by someone who is speaking on your topic. Hearing another person’s voice speak about what you want to write about will start a conversation in your head that will lead to ideas pouring out of you like water from a faucet.
- Make a list of ideas that you would like to write about. As you take some notes more ideas will flow and soon you will be writing.
- Surf the net. By going on the internet and searching for more information on your topic, you will have ideas coming out of your ears. One site will lead you to the next and the next thing you know you will have your own ideas mixed in with those of hundreds of other people. Your own voice will emerge and you will have much to write about in your specific area.
